YLE, Finland's national broadcaster, has made headlines with a groundbreaking move in its latest diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative. The company has cast Sudanese-born Finn Saka Zumba as Simo Häyhä, the legendary sniper known as the "White Death," in their upcoming Winter War film titled Black Man, White Death.
The film, which retells the story of one of Finland's most iconic historical figures, is set during the Winter War (1939–1940) between Finland and the Soviet Union. Häyhä, known for his unmatched marksmanship and resilience, has long been a symbol of Finnish grit and determination. YLE's decision to cast Zumba in the role is a significant departure from traditional portrayals, aiming to explore Finland's evolving identity and reimagine its historical narratives.
Director Kari Runck defended the decision to cast Zumba, citing its alignment with historical authenticity. “Simo Häyhä was a farmer before the war, someone deeply connected to the land, and black people globally have a long history of working in the fields.
With Black Man, White Death slated for release in late 2025, the film is poised to be a cultural touchstone. Whether embraced as a bold step forward or met with resistance, YLE’s latest production has already succeeded in igniting a national conversation about representation, tradition, and the evolving face of Finnish identity.
As Saka Zumba steps into the boots of Simo Häyhä, audiences are bracing for a film that promises to be as thought-provoking as it is visually compelling—a tale of heroism reimagined for a new era.
